Burning a candle is easy and a very enjoyable practice to have but it can also be quite dangerous if not done properly or with care. Make your candles last longer and get clarity and peace instead of having a mess to clean up by following the tips & tricks below.

Trim the wick often and check for debris.

Before re-lighting a candle, always trim the wick to ¼ inch and remove any debris left in the wax pool such as wick trimmings from before, matches or any dust that may have accumulated since then. Any debris left on top of the candle wax can cause the flame to unexpectedly flare up or even start a small fire near the candle flame. Not trimming your wicks create uneven burning, dripping, flaring and sooting (that unwanted black smoke). Your candles will burn up to 25% longer if you trim the wick every couple of hours.

Burn your candle for the right amount of time.

The first burning of your candle, is the most important. Your candle needs to burn from edge to edge and liquefy all the way across the top. We call this a “full melt pool”. This is to avoid tunneling or  to prevent your candle from creating a “memory ring”. It looks like just the wax in the middle or surrounding the wick is melting and not the rest of your lovely candle. Most times, it will cause the candle to burn that way for the life of the candle.  You can correct a candle from tunneling but it’s better if you just get the hang of it from the start.

Don’t burn your candles for too long.

Burning a candle for too long will cause the wick to become unstable and produce a dangerously large flame or cause your candle to smoke and release soot. Avoid this by making sure you are following the manufacturer’s instructions. In general, it is recommended that candles do not burn for longer than four hours and cool for at least two hours before relighting.

Keep the flame away from moving air.

When burning a candle, avoid placing it in areas near or under fans, air conditioners, open windows, or crowded places. Moving air can disturb the flame, resulting in those pesky black marks on the glass and lots of smoke in the air. Also, make sure it’s not in a place where it will get bumped often or in an area where anyone will easily pick it up more than a few times while lit. When a candle is burning and the wax (with the fragrance in it) gets on the burning wick, it too can cause unwanted sooting or smoke.

Store your candles properly.

Store candles in a cool, dark and dry place with the lid or dust cover on it to keep them clean of dust and debris, and to help protect the wax and fragrance. Protecting your candle, means that it will last longer and that’s the result we all want in the end.
